Keeping Your Home and Family Safe During a Power Outage
Here are helpful tips to prepare for a power outage so you and your family will be ready to handle emergency situations.
Prepare for a Power Outage with an Emergency Kit
Don’t wait until you hear reports of bad weather to gather supplies. Prepare for a power outage by assembling a kit of emergency supplies. The kit should include flashlights, a first aid kit, and warm blankets. Tailor it to the needs of your family. For instance, families with children might want to include entertainment and comfort items. If you have family members with health concerns, prepare kit items for them too.
Factor in food and water as well. Should you have to vacate your house, you will need supplies for yourself and your family.
Place your kit in an area that is convenient to access without power. Make sure all family members know where the kit is located in the event of a power outage.
Unplug Electronics
Prepare for a power outage by unplugging your devices during a storm. If a power outage is expected, disconnect electronics, such as your TV, computer, and wireless router to avoid damage caused by a surge. Plan for the unexpected by using a surge protector for your devices. Keep things unplugged throughout the outage. A power surge may occur when the power is restored as well.
Conserve Your Resources
Power outages are unpredictable and might last longer than expected. Prepare for extended outages by using your resources efficiently. Keep battery-operated lights off when they’re not in use. When multiple people with flashlights are in the same room, only one person should have a flashlight on at a time.
Avoid opening your refrigerator unless it’s necessary. Keeping the refrigerator closed as much as possible will maintain the refrigerator’s temperature for longer and protect your perishable food from spoiling.
Have an Alternative Source of Power
A gas-powered generator is a great way to prepare for a power outage. A generator will keep essential appliances running during an outage. Keep extra fuel on hand for emergencies, but cycle that fuel regularly, as gasoline has a shelf-life of three to six months.
Prepare for a Power Outage by Making a Plan
Make a plan with your family so that everyone knows what to do in a power outage. Select a room to meet in once it occurs. Keep everyone in the same room during cold weather, as this will consolidate heat. Teach your family how to use the tools in your emergency kit. Practice power outage drills at home If you want to take your preparation a step further.
Start your preparation early. Doing it ahead of time is the best way to feel safer and more comfortable during a power outage.
